Under the supervision of the head of the DPPA strategic communications team, the Public Information Officer, within delegated authority, has the following responsibilities:

  1. Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate with DPPA Divisions to identify compelling information and stories that effectively communicate the importance and impact of the Department’s work through innovative, attractive, accessible, and polished communication products.
  • Expand departmental promotional and outreach activities by establishing partnerships relevant to the organization.
  • Draft complex material for newsletters, periodicals, and reports, and edit drafts prepared by junior officers. Assist in the drafting of speeches and statements.
  • Provide advice and expertise on public affairs issues, methods, and approaches to managers, senior officers, and other public information staff. Anticipate and resolve communication and public relations issues and problems.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with key constituencies to garner support and maximize the impact of promotional objectives. Serve as a spokesperson and principal liaison to media organizations, governmental bodies, national groups, private sector organizations, educational organizations, international organizations, etc.
  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of diverse information and communication products, including printed and audiovisual materials, media pitches, and social media messaging.
  1. Evaluation and Reporting:
  • Evaluate the results and impact of communication activities. Report on developments, trends, and attitudes regarding the UN.
  1. Operational Support:
  • Assist in the day-to-day operation of the unit, including coordinating substantive and administrative activities, interpreting and disseminating policy, providing procedural advice, improving reporting systems, handling operational and administrative queries, preparing budget submissions, establishing and/or coordinating training programs, and monitoring and evaluating results.


  • Professionalism: Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of public information and communication. Ability to analyze and integrate diverse information from various sources. Handle sensitive situations diplomatically and cultivate productive relationships. Deliver clear and concise written communications products. Conduct effective oral presentations. Display professional competence, conscientiousness, efficiency, and persistence. Incorporate gender perspectives and ensure equal participation.
  • Communication: Communicate clearly and effectively in speech and writing. Listen attentively, interpret messages correctly, and respond appropriately. Foster two-way communication and share information openly.
  • Planning & Organizing: Develop clear goals, prioritize activities, allocate resources effectively, and adjust plans as necessary. Monitor and adjust actions to meet objectives. Efficiently manage time.


  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related area.
  • Experience in drafting and editing for publication and in speechwriting.
  • Experience in crafting effective thematic information or communication initiatives or campaigns related to peace and security, humanitarian affairs, or human rights.
  • Experience providing support on strategic communications to a senior official in a front office setting.
  • Experience working with web content is desirable.
  • Experience in multimedia production is desirable.


  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
