Responsibilities:
Under the authority delegated to them and depending on their location, the Assistant Communications Officer will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Coordination and Capacity Building:
  • Coordinate outreach efforts to local media, civil society organizations, government agencies, and national NGOs.
  • Draft and disseminate information about the Mission’s goals and activities to local media and organizations, supporting outreach initiatives.
  • Develop partnerships with key national stakeholders, sharing work plans and content, and working closely with partners to enhance visibility and understanding of the Mission’s work.
  • Monitor and analyze current events, public opinion, and the press, identifying relevant issues and trends in the country and providing input for management reports.
  • Build capacity and provide support to local media and partners through regular contact and specialized training to address knowledge and skill gaps.
  1. Communication Strategy Support:
  • Contribute to the implementation of the Mission’s communication strategy by assisting in the preparation of press releases, feature stories, social media posts, communication plans, reports, and briefings based on official UN documentation and other sources.
  • Support the organization of events and activities, both traditional and digital, such as conferences, press briefings, interviews, and social media campaigns, including the preparation of briefing materials for senior officials.
  • Coordinate with colleagues and partners to gather and disseminate information on assigned topics/issues, including the preparation of background materials, fact sheets, presentations, and reports.
  1. Coordination and External Relations:
  • Respond to various inquiries and information requests internally and externally, preparing related correspondence and updates to facilitate the exchange of information between the Mission and headquarters under the guidance of the supervisor.
  1. Internal Communications Support:
  • Draft content for reports, newsletters, and other materials of interest to internal audiences.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of UNJHRO reports.
  1. Other Duties:
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

  • Minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related area (not required for candidates with an advanced university degree).
  • Experience in designing, planning, and implementing institutional communication strategies is desirable.
  • Experience in developing communication plans integrating innovative and digital tools is desirable.
  • Experience working in media in a conflict environment is desirable.
  • Familiarity with computer graphics tools such as MS Office, Publisher, and communication software is desirable.
  • Experience working in an institutional and socio-political context of a conflict environment is desirable.
  • Experience in community management is desirable.

Languages:

  • Fluent in French (both oral and written); knowledge of English is desirable.
  • Fluency in Lingala and/or Swahili is desirable.
